Some of the first true knitting we have are socks from Medieval Egypt. Many of these socks and sock fragments are worked in blue and white cotton with bands of stranded knitting representing the arabic word “Allah” (God). I was inspired by this to create this jacket in blue and white cotton with bands of stranded knitting with the word for “peace” in as many languages as I could fit. (There are 98 to be exact!)

When chart is complete, work 1 round MC, 1 round CC, 1 round MC, 1 round CC.

Divide for armholes: If you’re steeking, k to first marker, cast on 6 sts for armhole steek, k to second marker, cast on 6 sts for armhole steek, continue as follows. If you’re knitting flat: on next row, k to first marker, join second ball of yarn, k to second marker, join third ball of yarn, work 3 sections separately from this point on. Work 26 rows in MC. Work 1 round CC, 1 round MC, 1 round CC, 1 round MC. On next round, begin chart for band 4 (see notes). When chart is complete, work 1 round MC, 1 round CC, 1 round MC, 1 round CC. Shape neck: On next row, bind off front steek (if you’re steeking) and 7 sts. (Bind off 7 sts at neck edge if you’re not steeking). Continue, in either case, to work back and forth. Bind off 7 sts at beg of next row (other neck edge). Dec 1 st each side of neck edge every row 10 times (44 sts rem in each front portion). Work even in MC until piece measures 23.5” (58.75cm). Bind off all sts. Sew and cut steeks, if necessary. Sew shoulder seam.

Sleeves: Using shorter needle and MC, pick up 104 sts around armhole opening. Place marker and work in the round. *Note: you will need to work charted letters upside down for them to read properly. Begin banding pattern, using bands for sleeves. At the same time, dec 1 st before and after marker every 17th row 4 times (96 sts). Work even until sleeve measures 16.5” (41.25 cm). K 1 round CC, p 1 round CC, K 1 round MC, p 1 round MC, bind off. Repeat on second side using words for second sleeve bands.

Hood: (worked flat) *Note: you will need to work charted letters upside down for them to read properly. Using MC, cast on 148 sts. P 1 row. Begin banding pattern, using bands for hood. At the same time, dec I st each side of every right side row18 times (110 sts rem) When you are ready to begin the 26 rows of MC after second band of words, bind off 39 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Continue on 32 sts in band pattern. When this section (these 32 sts) measures 7.25” (18 cm), bind seams. Sew hood to body

Notes: To provide a chart for every word would take too much space. I’ve provided a chart for the alphabet; all you need to do is take some graph paper (regular or knitter’s) and block out the words. Leave 3 sts between each word. I’ve included charts for the non-English alphabet Hebrew and Greek words.
