This pattern was inspired by yarn my friend gave me.   It was singing to become an easy triangular shawl. Since the yarn was sock weight, the shawl needed to be open and have a strong pattern motif. The diamond pattern and straight edges help to enhance the triangular form of the shawl.

This pattern is a: Knit Pattern

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Materials:

Yarn:

C*EYE*BER Fiber Yarns [Superwash Merino; 433yd skein]; color: Unique (any solid/semi solid would look lovely); 1 skein. (There was only a very small amount of yarn left over after this shawl was complete.)

Yarn Substitute:

any sock weight yarn of at least 433 yds

Knitting Needles:

Circular US# 6, Length in inches _24

Notions and Accessories:

Stitch markers, darning needle, pins for blocking

Pattern:

shawl1spacerThis shawl is worked from the neck down to the bottom point. The triangular shape is achieved by knitting yo’s (yarn overs) on each side of the shawl.   The top of the shawl has an arch that fits the nape of your neck perfectly.

You can choose to work this entire pattern from the charts or from the written instructions, both have been included.

Directions (please read this through before you start as this will get you started and is an overview of the chart/written directions below):

Using a provisional cast on, cast on 3 stitches .  Work 42 rows in garter st (knit every st, every row). Turn and pick up 21 stitches along the side of the piece, placing a marker after the third stitch and before the last three stitches.    (27 stitches total)

Row 1:  K3, yo, pm, work row 1 of chart1 , pm, yo, k1 (center stitch), pm, yo, work row 1 of chart 1 (you can work the chart the same way as the first side), pm, yo, k3.
Row 2 and all [WS] rows: p except first and last 3 sts keep in garter.
Row 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19: Work chart 1 as established from Row 1.

Now Chart 2 will be used.  The stitches that you increased are now incorporated into the lace pattern and more stitches are added, creating a triangle shaped shawl.  The center section (green highlighted) is worked over the repeats of already established lace patterned sections. So the second time you work chart 2 the center section (highlighted section) will be worked 3 times; third chart repeat it will be worked 5 times. You will work chart 2 for a total of 5 repeats.

Now it is time to start the edging for the shawl. Continue to work the first and last 3 sts in garter stitch and work the edging chart along the shawl. There is no center st so you will continue to work the chart over all the shawl stitches.

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends but do not cut yarn. Soak and block the shawl, stretching the fabric as much as you like. To get straight edges I weave in some dmc floss along the edge of each side and pin tightly off of the floss.  This technique doesn’t pull the knit fabric as much and uses fewer pins. Once the shawl is dry, remove pins and floss and cut the loose ends.
